How Pipette Calibration Works
Pipettes are typically calibrated gravimetrically. The pipette dispenses water onto a precision balance, and the weight of each dispense is converted to volume, accounting for the water’s temperature. Repeating this several times at different volume settings shows two things: accuracy (how close the average dispense is to the volume it’s set to) and precision (how consistent the dispenses are with each other).
For multichannel pipettes, each channel is tested on its own. One channel can drift while the others stay fine, and every well it fills will be off.
Why Pipettes Drift
Pipettes are precision instruments that get used hundreds of times a day. Seals and O-rings wear, pistons get scratched or contaminated, and tip cones get damaged. Liquids drawn up past the tip can corrode internal parts, and a single drop can knock a pipette out of calibration. In most cases, nothing about the pipette looks or feels wrong while it’s dispensing the wrong volume.
Regular calibration catches that drift before it shows up as failed assays, inconsistent results, or an audit finding. If your pipettes need service beyond calibration, let us know when you request a quote.
Who Relies on Pipette Calibration
Pipettes are everyday tools across QSI’s service area, from the Conejo Valley’s biotech companies to the region’s clinical and quality control labs:
Pharmaceutical and biotech: research, formulation, and QC work under FDA and cGMP requirements
Medical device manufacturing: lab testing under ISO 13485 quality systems
Research and university labs: experiments where volume errors compound across every step
Food and beverage: quality and safety testing labs
Manufacturing QC labs: chemistry and materials testing for coatings, plastics, cosmetics, and more
Frequently Asked Questions
-
How often should pipettes be calibrated?
Many labs calibrate pipettes every 6 to 12 months. Pipettes used heavily, used with volatile or corrosive liquids, or used for critical work may need calibration more often. Your quality system and the manufacturer’s recommendations should set the final interval.

How are pipettes calibrated?
Pipettes are typically calibrated gravimetrically: the pipette dispenses water onto a precision balance, and the weight of each dispense is converted to volume. Repeating this at several volume settings shows both how accurate the pipette is and how consistent it is from one dispense to the next.
-
Can QSI calibrate multichannel and electronic pipettes?
Yes. QSI calibrates single-channel, multichannel, and electronic pipettes from all major manufacturers. For multichannel pipettes, each channel is tested, since one channel can be off while the others are fine.
-
Can I mail in pipettes for calibration?
Yes. QSI accepts mail-in calibration from anywhere in the United States. Ship your pipettes to our Oxnard lab, and we’ll return them with your calibration certificate.
-
Is QSI an accredited calibration lab?
Yes. QSI is an ISO/IEC 17025 accredited calibration laboratory, accredited by ANAB (certificate AC-3452). You can view our full scope of accreditation.
