Spectrum and Network Analyzer Calibration
Spectrum analyzers and network analyzers are the core instruments of RF work, and both depend on accurate frequency, amplitude, and level measurements. Over time, their internal references drift, components age, and input stages can be damaged by signals beyond their rated level, sometimes without any obvious symptom. An analyzer can display a clean, believable trace while reporting signal levels that are a few dB off.
Calibration verifies the analyzer’s frequency accuracy, amplitude accuracy, and other key specifications across its range, so the measurements behind your design, production, and compliance data are trustworthy.
Signal Generator Calibration
Signal and sweep generators are sources: other instruments and devices are tested against what they put out. If a generator’s output level or frequency is off, every test that uses it inherits the error. Calibration verifies that the frequency and output power your generator reports match what it actually delivers.
RF Power Meter and Sensor Calibration
RF power measurements are only as good as the sensor making them. Power sensors are sensitive to overload, connector wear, and rough handling, and each sensor’s response varies with frequency. Calibrating the meter and its sensors keeps transmitter power, amplifier output, and other power measurements accurate.
Attenuator and Filter Calibration
Attenuators and filters are passive components, but they still change over time. Connectors wear with every mating cycle, and damage or overpowering can shift their characteristics. Calibration measures attenuation, insertion loss, and frequency response, so you know exactly how each component affects the signals passing through it.
Who Relies on RF & Microwave Calibration
RF and microwave test equipment is central to some of the region’s most demanding work:
Aerospace and defense: radar, communications, and electronic systems testing, including work supporting Naval Base Ventura County
Electronics and communications manufacturing: production test and inspection of RF components and assemblies
Engineering and R&D labs: design verification and characterization of RF circuits and systems
Medical device manufacturing: wireless and RF-enabled devices tested under ISO 13485 quality systems
Frequently Asked Questions
-
How often should a spectrum analyzer be calibrated?
Most quality programs calibrate spectrum analyzers once a year, following the manufacturer’s recommendation. An analyzer should also be checked after it’s exposed to an input signal beyond its rated level, since that can damage the input stage without obvious signs.
-
Why do RF power sensors need calibration?
RF power sensors are sensitive to overload, connector wear, and handling, and each sensor’s response varies with frequency. Regular calibration keeps your power measurements accurate across the frequencies you use.
-
Do attenuators and filters need calibration?
Yes. Connector wear, damage, and overpowering can change an attenuator’s or filter’s characteristics over time. Calibration measures attenuation, insertion loss, and frequency response so you know exactly how each component affects your signals.
-
Can I mail in RF test equipment for calibration?
Yes. QSI accepts mail-in calibration from anywhere in the United States. Request a quote to get started.
-
Is QSI an accredited calibration lab?
Yes. QSI is an ISO/IEC 17025 accredited calibration laboratory, accredited by ANAB (certificate AC-3452). You can view our full scope of accreditation.
